What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is the time Saturn takes to pass through three signs: the one before your natal Moon, the Moon’s own sign, and the one after it. Saturn spends about 2½ years in each.
It comes about once every 29 to 30 years, so most people live through it two or three times.
The three phases
The rising phase (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon) is often felt in expenses, sleep and endings. The peak phase (Saturn over the Moon) is the most searching, for the mind and health. The setting phase (Saturn in the 2nd) is felt in family and money, as things settle.
How it feels depends on your whole chart: Saturn’s strength, the dasha you are in, and what Saturn rules for your lagna.
Dhaiya: Kantak and Ashtama Shani
A Dhaiya is Saturn’s 2½ years in the 4th sign from the Moon (Kantak Shani) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani). It is smaller than Sade Sati and asks for the same care: steady routines, patience and service.
Is Sade Sati always difficult?
No. Saturn teaches through effort and time, and many people build their most lasting work, home or discipline during Sade Sati. For a lagna that Saturn rules well, such as Taurus, Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius, it is often kinder.
