What is Mangal dosha?
Mangal dosha, also called Manglik or Kuja dosha, is formed when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Mars brings drive, courage and heat, and in these houses that energy is felt in home and married life.
It is counted from the lagna (the rising sign), and also from the Moon and from Venus. The more of these it touches, the stronger it is.
How strong is it?
This check gives a severity from 0 to 100: most weight when Mars is in a Manglik house from the lagna, less from the Moon and from Venus. A reading under 50 is mild.
Without a birth time the lagna is not known, so the check is read from the Moon and from Venus only.
When is Mangal dosha cancelled?
The classical texts list many cancellations. Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn) cancels it. So does Mars in certain signs in certain houses, such as Mars in Cancer or Capricorn in the 7th.
Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars softens it a great deal. And when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered balanced.
Does it affect marriage?
Mangal dosha describes temperament, not fate. It asks for a partner who matches your energy and for patience in the early years. Many happy marriages have one or both partners Manglik.
